After the death of Alber Elbaz in April 2021, his partner, Alex Koo, organized a tribute show; 45 designers created pieces in Elbaz’s honor last October, Rick Owens, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dries Van Noten, and Olivier Rousteing among them. In the last months of his life, Elbaz had launched AZ Factory with Richemont, a “solutions-based” brand that was going to rewrite the fashion rules, making designer clothes not just more affordable but more accessible to women in a range of different sizes, paying attention to environmental responsibility in the process. Elbaz’s point of view was that the old way of doing things was hard on designers (see his exit from Lanvin), and it didn’t serve the women it purported to either.
