The Swans" premiere on January 31, the designer, who was born in Georgia, whisks us back in time to a time of extravagant luxury. Koma's designs pay homage to the legendary characters with a clean, precise array that deftly combines feathers and bows, evoking the royal beauty of swans.
In a preview interview, Koma said that a 1935 Hollywood costume party photo of Marlene Dietrich wearing a swan outfit served as the inspiration for his obsession with the swan look. Even though Dietrich wasn't involved in Capote's Swans, Koma's artistic perspective was forever altered by her connection to the captivating creature. His goal was to portray a cinematic opulence, and long black halterneck dresses with crystalized embellishments projected a sophisticated charm.
The collection exemplifies Koma's painstaking attention to detail, with sharp and seductive shapes softened by silk lace in vivid red and immaculate white. The ethereal impression of the hand-drawn swan wings, beautifully embroidered on translucent tulle, is accentuated by the crystals and reflected plexiglass. The components are joined together by knotted bows, both literally and symbolically, which add to the swan motif's story of elegance and sophistication.
The collection is given a glamorous touch by sequins that are deftly woven into monochromatic tweed pieces, which perfectly capture the essence of the scandalous and turbulent lifestyles of the Swans. Shades of pure white, various tones of grey, and a baby powdered pink, which represent the complex intricacy of the Swans' lives, bring Koma's cinematic phrase to life.
While Queen Elizabeth II, the Greek gods Aphrodite and Amphitrite, and Marlene Dietrich have all been honoured in Koma's previous collections, the designer notes that the move to the realm of swans was a logical development of concepts. The collection perfectly combines elements of elegance, confidence, and regality to capture the essence of the swan, which is the most graceful and self-assured bird on the planet.
