Read his very insightful interview below
I’m Gabe Sadowsky, I am from New Hampshire originally and I moved to Miami in 2017 to finish college at The University of Miami. I majored in Exercise Physiology and Pre-Med and was pursuing medical school when I realized it wasn’t for me. That happened around the time I started modeling.
When did you discover you had a passion for modeling?
When I was 10 I was approached by a business owner to do a shoot for his skateboarding/clothes brand and I got pretty excited with the prospect that people saw something special in me and chose me to represent their clothes/brand.
10 years old! Wow, that's pretty cool. Can you share any insights about what it’s like to be a male model that people may not realize, or understand from the outside?
There’s a lot of time spent on castings and doing test shoots and there’s never really any guarantee of money or work. Also, not every make model is like how they are portrayed on Zoolander
Has the body-positivity movement, which promotes self-acceptance regardless of one’s body shape and size, affected you as a model?
Not really. I am on the “bigger” size because I am relatively muscular, so I have been told I need to lose weight to get more jobs, but I prioritize my own goals over solely booking more work as a model.
In your opinion; What is Self-Love? And how can you inspire others to love themselves more and stay authentic to their true personality?
Accepting who you are and the body you have, taking care of it with good food, exercising and not overdoing it with harmful drugs/alcohol, and living a happy low-stress life. I think everyone should respect their body and exercise to maximize their potential.
How do you empower others through your work as a model and a person of Influence?
I’m not sure if I empower others, but I like to help people achieve their fitness goals and be more supportive of others who are on a journey to be the best version of themselves
Can you tell us about the people who may have influenced your life and career?
My Parents instilled a solid work ethic in me regardless of what I do for work and a shout out to photographer Scott Teitler for helping me get started and putting me on the right path modeling-wise
Do you remember your first experience in front of the Camera?
I’ve been off and on, so I have a few “first times” but I definitely was pretty cold and awkward the first few times!
Who are some of your favorite photographers?
Scott Teitler, Aldrin Del Carmen, and I had a great time shooting with Daria Valiguras!
How big a role does modelling play in your life?
Modeling is a part-time gig for me, I have a solid life outside of modeling, and sometimes I get busier or less busy during different times of the year.
Who or what is your biggest motivation in life?
My parents, since they set me up with such a solid foundation that I feel obligated to succeed in life.
What Would You Consider the Most Important Components of Your Style? And Do You Feel You Have a Signature Style as a model?
Honestly, I like very simple minimal clothing, no excessive branding and you can always catch me in athleisure.
If you could change one thing about the fashion and modelling industry, what would it be? What would you improve?
Giving feedback on castings and how to book more jobs. Sometimes it just feels like they’re looking for a random person and you never get a chance to improve
What excites you the most about being in front of the camera?
The potential to see myself in a way I never have before and to create something that makes me and perhaps others go “wow!”
What is the most challenging part of being a model?
Body Dysmorphia - you’re in competition with other great-looking people and sometimes you focus more on your own flaws than what you have going for you.
What are some of the biggest hurdles you have been faced with as a model and how did you overcome them?
Slimming down - when I started I had to lose 20 lbs, which wasn’t a big deal and actually put me in a healthier position, but I had never really reliably lost that much weight, so it was a bit of a challenge.
What do you consider your biggest professional success so far?
Being on a TV commercial for MSC Cruises. I was watching some NFL with my girlfriend and was completely shocked to see myself in a commercial without expecting it!
What are some of your latest and upcoming projects?
I recently did a commercial for Tropical Smoothie Cafe and a High Noon shoot and I’m currently featured on the High Noon homepage!
How do you prep for a shoot from an exercise and nutrition perspective? Any tricks of the trade? For how long?
Try not to eat too many carbs and salt the day before to reduce water retention. I try not to overeat in the morning prior to the shoot and if possible, I like to get a bit of a muscle pump prior. I lift 5-7 days a week and do cardio 2-4 times a week. For diet, I like to stay in a slight caloric deficit or at maintenance, make sure I get a lot of protein and for supplements, I take whey protein isolate and creatine, in fact, I have my own supplement company that focuses exclusively on those supplements.
What are you doing when you are not working?
I’m in the gym, walking my dog, hanging out with friends and family, playing golf, or working on my company Nutrition On The Go.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to go into modelling? And to our readers looking to get in shape?
Get in the best shape possible, take polaroids with a blank background and good lighting, no makeup, and submit to agencies and try to be proactive with agencies.
To get in the best shape, learn proper weightlifting form, focus on progressive overload and pushing yourself in the gym, get a food scale and calorie tracking app, and track everything you consume. Try to get 10k steps a day and do low-impact cardio and if you take supplements, only focus on creatine and quality protein, maybe omega 3s and zinc/magnesium. The rest is crap.
Any last words you’d like to add?
