Patrick McDowell SS26 Collection: The Lancashire Rose Blooms
At Battersea Power Station, where industrial might meets cultural reinvention, Patrick McDowell staged a deeply personal Spring/Summer 2026 collection. Entitled The Lancashire Rose, the presentation honored his grandmother, Kathleen, whose life in Lancashire’s milling and mining community became both muse and moral compass. Fresh from receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, McDowell used the moment to mark a pivotal transition from bespoke couture to ready-to-wear, signaling his ambition to scale while staying true to his ethos of circularity and craft.
Kathleen’s presence was felt in every detail. Her wedding chrysanthemums bloomed as organza appliqués and vintage brooches, pinned delicately to structured bustiers. A sweeping skirt composed of deconstructed trench coats paid homage to honeymoon photographs in Blackpool, balancing storytelling with striking modernity. A pared-back grey silk skirt suit scattered with black flowers exuded quiet poise, while a gold taffeta jacket, paired with a matching handbag, channeled an old-world elegance that felt both nostalgic and assured.
Collaboration underscored the collection’s spirit. Accessories designed with Aspinal of London bags, scarves, and slippers mirrored Kathleen’s lifelong habit of meticulous coordination, while digital product passports via Certilogo layered in a forward-looking commitment to traceability. This union of heritage and innovation defined the show’s strongest moments, bridging memory with modernity.
At times, however, the symbolism bordered on heavy-handed, with chrysanthemums and narrative cues occasionally overwhelming the garments themselves. The coordinated accessory sets, while charming, sometimes read as merchandising vignettes rather than instinctive styling. Yet when McDowell allowed silhouette, texture, and construction to lead, most memorably, in the trench skirt, the results struck a confident balance between concept and wearability.
As a debut ready-to-wear outing, The Lancashire Rose marked a decisive step in McDowell’s evolution. Emotional and yet ambitious, it reflected a designer capable of weaving intimate storytelling into garments that resonate beyond the runway. With refinement, his vision has the potential to not only bloom within London Fashion Week’s landscape but also to endure as part of its future fabric.
