Donna Karan SS27 Collection: A Softer Expression of Power
Since its relaunch under G-III, Donna Karan New York has steadily re-established the defining codes of its founder’s vision: dressing the modern woman as powerful, multifaceted, and uncompromisingly herself. For Spring Summer 2027, that authority remains intact but takes on a more fluid expression, exploring what happens when strength is allowed to soften without losing its presence.
The collection draws on precise moments from Donna Karan’s archive, rather than broad historical references. Powdery pink, inspired by a late-1990s campaign, opens the story, while the rich greens seen in Gwyneth Paltrow’s wardrobe from Great Expectations, a film for which Karan worked on the costumes, inform another chapter. A masculine power suit rendered in pink tropical wool captures the collection’s central tension, pairing traditional structure with a distinctly feminine softness.
That dialogue continues through elongated proportions and fluid construction. Double-layer fine-gauge knitwear, long crinkled nylon skirts, wide-leg trousers, dropped waists, and bias-cut dresses reinterpret late-1990s signatures with contemporary ease. Asymmetrical hems introduce movement, while romance remains deliberately restrained, allowing the sharper edges of the classic Donna Karan woman to evolve into something more intimate and relaxed.
Color and material further shape the narrative, moving from delicate pink into washed taupe, saddle, and copper tones before opening into creams and whites and eventually deepening into basil and pistachio greens, black, and gold. Innovation remains subtle but purposeful: metallic threads give taffeta a sculptural "memory", engineered stretch is incorporated into jacket linings, and water-repellent finishes enhance functionality without announcing themselves as technical details.
The collection also reinforces the brand’s emphasis on accessible luxury, with pieces remaining below $1,000. Strong-performing dresses return with greater prominence for spring, while lightweight knitwear and jackets continue to emerge as key categories. The introduction of Icons takes the archival revival further, reissuing selected Donna Karan dresses using original patterns, bias construction, specialty jerseys, and sculptural hardware, again at accessible price points.
For Spring/Summer 2027, Donna Karan New York proposes a different kind of strength. Instead of adding more armour, the house embraces movement, softness, and ease, offering a sophisticated wardrobe for women who want authority without rigidity and elegance without restraint.
