Mizen presented its Spring/Summer 2027 collection in Yotsuya, Tokyo, built around an intriguing and deeply considered premise: 38 centimetres, the traditional width of kimono cloth and approximately a quarter of standard apparel fabric. Rather than treating this narrow format as a limitation, Mizen transforms it into the foundation of its design philosophy, exploring how freedom can emerge from restriction while bringing traditional craftsmanship into dialogue with contemporary fashion.

The collection develops through three distinct construction languages: Slash, Horizon, and Sash. In Slash, the 38-centimetre cloth travels diagonally across the body, creating an asymmetric line from the right hem towards the left. The concept is particularly clear in a sheer white shirt, where even the chest pocket follows the same trajectory. Horizon takes the cloth horizontally from the centre back towards the sleeves, allowing the straight line of the textile to determine the silhouette rather than shaping the fabric conventionally around the body. Sash, or tasuki, draws a single length of cloth diagonally from the shoulder to the back and around to the front, resulting in elegant asymmetry across camisoles, tanks, and dresses.

Materiality follows construction, with each textile selected to complement the form. For summer, Mizen incorporates Omi chijimi, a lightweight crimped hemp weave traditionally associated with summer kimono and yukata, giving jackets, tops, and shirt-like outerwear an airy tactile quality. Particularly distinctive is the Sash camisole dress, crafted with ribbon weaving from Tango, Kyoto, using hand-dyed silk ribbons woven into a richly textured textile whose artisanal character contrasts beautifully with the clean geometry of the silhouette.

With Spring/Summer 2027, Mizen demonstrates how tradition can become a method for innovation. By returning the 38-centimetre kimono textile to the beginning of the garment-making process, the collection dissolves the conventional boundaries between artisan and designer, heritage and modernity, creating a sophisticated new language of form shaped by both discipline and freedom.
