MICHELLE YEOH RETURNS TO BUSAN AS ASIAN FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR
An exclusive OTS Magazine UK fashion and culture report produced in collaboration with our international media partner INSTYLEASIA, bringing you the latest from the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
After 15 years away from the Busan International Film Festival, Michelle Yeoh returned to the red carpet in a moment that brought together cinema, fashion, and a remarkable chapter in Asian film history.
The Oscar-winning actress arrived at the 31st BIFF in Busan, where she was honoured with the festival's Asian Filmmaker of the Year award at the opening ceremony on 6 October. The honour recognises her exceptional contribution to Asian cinema and her influence across the global film industry.
Dressed in a shimmering silver gown, Yeoh brought a sense of understated glamour to the red carpet, pausing to acknowledge fans gathered to welcome her back to Busan. The moment felt particularly fitting for an actress whose career has consistently connected Asian cinema with audiences around the world.
A Return 15 Years in the Making
Yeoh's return to BIFF comes 15 years after her previous appearance at the festival with The Lady in 2011.
This time, her arrival carried a very different significance. She returned not simply as one of international cinema's most recognisable Asian stars, but as the recipient of one of BIFF's major honours.
The festival describes the Asian Filmmaker of the Year as an award recognising an Asian film professional or organisation that has made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of Asian cinema. Yeoh's career, spanning Hong Kong cinema, Hollywood, and award-winning international productions, makes her a fitting recipient.
Everything Everywhere All for Michelle
BIFF is also celebrating Yeoh through its Special Program in Focus, “Everything Everywhere All for Michelle.”
The programme brings together four films representing different chapters and dimensions of her cinematic career: Reign of Assassins, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Sean Baker's short Sandiwara, and her latest feature, It's My Time, in which she stars and serves as executive producer.
The selection reflects the breadth of Yeoh's work, from martial arts cinema and Hollywood productions to contemporary independent filmmaking, while giving audiences an opportunity to revisit the performances that helped establish her as one of Asia's most influential international stars.
More Than a Red Carpet Moment
There was also something especially meaningful about seeing Yeoh greet the crowds outside the festival.
Her career has long carried a significance beyond individual performances. From challenging expectations around Asian women in action cinema to becoming the first Asian actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, Yeoh has helped expand the possibilities of where Asian talent can stand on the global stage. BIFF itself describes her as a trailblazer who transformed the representation of women in action cinema.
Her presence in Busan therefore feels less like a retrospective and more like a continuation.
And speaking at the festival on 7 October, Yeoh reflected that outlook herself, saying she remains open to new challenges and opportunities rather than being afraid of failure.
A New Chapter in Busan
The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs from 6 to 15 October 2026, with 316 films from 59 countries forming part of this year's programme.
For Michelle Yeoh, however, this year's festival carries a more personal significance.
Fifteen years after her last appearance, she has returned to Busan to receive an honour celebrating the very journey that brought her from Asian cinema to the world stage.
On the red carpet, surrounded by fans and cameras, the moment felt fitting: a global icon returning to a festival that has always celebrated the strength, diversity, and international reach of Asian cinema.
