Alaïa Summer Fall 2024 collection fashion show 'La Robe Spirale'
Emotionally and intellectually, Pieter Mulier's Fall Alaia display for Summer Fall 2024 created a lasting impression as his models moved effortlessly across the mirrored floor of the Paris shop. The collection included an enthralling blend of sculptural, spiralling clothing that shocked and surprised the viewers. Mulier defied fashion conventions with her inventive methods, elaborate draperies, and avant-garde forms, which linked the feminine body to an elegant mindset in a class apart.
Merino wool served as a unifying element in Mulier's collection, tying the pieces together both conceptually and technically. Everything was made of this one material, from the disassembled knitwear with looped threads that started the show to the sculptural jackets and asymmetrical skirts that resembled topiaries.
The collection Mulier created, which showcased the designer's technical skill and mathematical ability, was inspired by the simplicity of circles and was the outcome of a rigorous year-long partnership with a limited group of suppliers.
In the middle of the applause, Mulier said what was most important about the set: simplicity. The phrase, in its seeming absurdity, perfectly captured the brilliance of his experimental methodology. It was deliberate to move away from the va-va-voom style of earlier seasons in order to capture a sensuality that was less obviously sexualized but yet incredibly evocative. Mulier's intent to create a nuanced balance between modesty and sensuality was evident in the exquisite interplay of covering and exposure seen in her draped tops, simple skirts, and sarong-like garments.
Mulier ventured into uncharted artistic ground with this compilation, eclipsing the suspense and challenge of honouring Azzedine Alaia's legendary vault. Mulier demonstrated his ability to follow his own path while honouring Alaia's sense of style with polka-dot designs, woollen puffs on glove-gauntlets, denim in curviform trousers, and jacquard animal prints. The clothes, which skillfully combined modern and traditional elements, symbolised a turning point in Mulier's career as he elevated the Alaia legacy to new heights.
Mulier's progress in this collection showed a break from the past and gave an Alaia woman a wonderfully-crafted wardrobe fit for the modern day. Mulier's dedication to innovation was demonstrated by the minute details, exacting maths and deft use of merino wool, opening a new chapter in the storied history of Alaia fashion.
