Carolina Herrera SS27 Collection: An American Legacy in Full Bloom
Carolina Herrera celebrated 45 years of enduring elegance during New York Fashion Week, transforming the Promenade of the David H. Koch Theater into a spectacular sea of 28,798 yellow tulips. It was a fittingly exuberant setting for a collection by Wes Gordon that honoured the house’s unmistakable codes while reflecting on the remarkable continuity of Herrera’s legacy.
Gordon, who was not yet born when Herrera founded her label in 1981, has spent the past eight years shaping its next chapter. For Spring/Summer 2027, he returned to the signatures that have defined the house across generations, opening with graphic black-and-white polka dots and culminating in an ethereal black gown finished with a softly ruffled neckline, described by Gordon as distinctly Nan Kempner.
The iconic Carolina Herrera white shirt was revisited throughout the collection, tucked beneath sculpted cummerbunds and styled with cigarette trousers, while another iteration was transformed into an elongated shirtdress that elegantly traced the hips. Elsewhere, sheer ball skirts and refined tailoring brought a sense of modern evening drama, while gold frog brooches offered a playful historical reference to La Grenouille, Herrera’s beloved New York restaurant.
Gordon also looked back at the cultural landscape surrounding the house’s beginnings. In collaboration with the Warhol Foundation, an elegant shift dress featured Andy Warhol’s celebrated silkscreen portrait of Mrs Herrera, while a partnership with The New Yorker inspired an organza T-shirt and dress embellished with the magazine’s cover from the week of Herrera’s first runway show. These gestures transformed personal and cultural memories into sophisticated fashion statements.
One particularly evocative look captured the essence of Herrera’s quintessential uptown woman: a silk twill headscarf, oversized sunglasses, and a collarless trench, imagined as she hails a cab along Park Avenue. In an era when the boundaries between uptown refinement and downtown irreverence have become increasingly fluid, Carolina Herrera continues to embody a distinctly polished vision of New York glamour. The Spring Summer 2027 collection ultimately served as both a celebration and continuation, a joyful affirmation of a house built by Herrera 45 years ago and now carried forward across generations by Gordon.
