Issey Miyake SS27 Collection: The Poetry of Space in Motion
For Spring/Summer 2027, presented during Paris Fashion Week, Satoshi Kondo and the Issey Miyake design team turn to the Japanese concept of ma: the space, pause, and interval between things, as the philosophical foundation for a collection titled Figure of Ma. Rather than beginning with conventional garment construction, the creative process began with movement itself, exploring how fabric could occupy space, respond to air, and interact with the body.
A vast 10-by-10-metre sheet of lightweight fabric was set into motion, allowing it to waft, float, and react before any definitive silhouettes were conceived. Kondo described this process as ma in its purest form, with the fabric appearing almost alive and possessing an identity of its own. That sense of freedom became the collection’s central creative impulse, resulting in clothing that feels less constructed than intuitively formed.
The runway was filled with expansive silhouettes and an extraordinary sense of lightness. Fine, sometimes almost transparent yarns created layers of translucency, while a vivid palette moved between azure, raspberry, lemon yellow, and pink, shifting effortlessly from sheer to opaque surfaces. Colour and volume were treated as dynamic elements, giving each look an almost weightless presence.
Innovation remained deeply embedded in the collection. Three-dimensional scans of the torso, developed in collaboration with Wacoal Corp, were transformed into sculptural tops, while ripstop fabric generated rounded, balloon-like forms that emerged from jackets and skirts. Elsewhere, horizontal pleating gave garments a buoyant quality, allowing the fabric to bounce and move with an almost choreographed rhythm.
With Figures of Ma, Issey Miyake continues to challenge conventional ideas of how clothing should be conceived and experienced. Spring/Summer 2027 transforms ma from an abstract philosophy into a tangible language of volume, colour, movement, and air, creating a wardrobe that feels both technically inventive and beautifully alive.
