Givenchy SS27 Collection: Precision as a New Form of Power

For Spring/Summer 2027, presented during Paris Fashion Week, Sarah Burton considers what happens to the architecture of clothing when the world itself feels increasingly unsettled. Rather than abandoning structure, Burton responds with precision, disciplined proportions, and an assured wardrobe designed to restore a sense of equilibrium. Her vision is one of clarity: clothing that empowers without overwhelming the woman wearing it.

The collection draws from Hubert de Givenchy’s earliest designs, particularly their striking combination of sharp black tailoring and animal prints. Burton was drawn to the cinematic character of those original collections, where the women possessed a distinctly Hitchcockian intensity rather than conventional beauty. Reinterpreting that spirit for today, she replaced Givenchy’s restrictive hobble skirts with technical knits that retain their precise, elongated line while allowing considerably greater freedom of movement. Fluted skirts opened with dramatic side slits, accompanied by sculptural straps that curved across crisp white shirts or contrasting bra tops.

Tailoring became an especially experimental proposition. Burton revisited the classic Givenchy suit jacket, slicing open its sides and pushing the front panels forward, while other jackets had their sleeves removed and repositioned into protective, almost sculptural embraces. Satin peplum jackets in saturated jewel tones were deliberately relaxed with jeans and heels, while tonal compositions combined oversized satin or leather shirts with open-sided skirts.

The collection also marked the first Givenchy show since Marco De Vincenzo joined the house as head of leather goods design, introducing a vibrant new selection of accessories. Among them was the Cut, a zippered hobo bag distinguished by its contrasting interior, designed to complement the attitude of each individual look rather than simply accessorise it. Burton’s approach remained personal, matching the character of the garments to the distinctive presence of the wearer.

Elsewhere, Burton’s understanding of modern glamour emerged through deceptively simple eveningwear, including a Yves Klein blue chiffon gown suspended from a looping gilded frame. Slicked-back hair and visor sunglasses reinforced the collection’s polished, almost futuristic confidence. Ultimately, Givenchy Spring/Summer 2027 makes a compelling case for fashion as a form of expression rather than imposition, offering women precision, strength, and sensuality while leaving space for individuality.
