Exclusive Interview: Yoko Matsuda
What does “women empowerment” mean to you personally?
Women's empowerment, to me, is the art of transforming life’s challenges into stepping stones. Whether as a woman, mother, wife, or actor, I strive to craft a meaningful path, embracing adversities as opportunities for growth. The more daunting the journey, the more fulfilling it becomes.

How has your international background shaped your perspective on women’s societal roles?
Living across diverse cultures taught me the value of freeing myself from traditional societal expectations. I realized that true strength lies in expressing my authentic thoughts and emotions. This liberation allowed me to live confidently and comfortably, moving beyond the often-restrictive norms for women in Japan.

How do you hope your acting inspires young women globally?
Through my work, I hope to show young women that beauty isn’t confined to grace or charm. By portraying the raw spectrum of human emotions—anger, sadness, and imperfection—I want to inspire others to embrace their humanity fully and authentically.

What challenges do you see women facing in today’s film industry?
The film industry is rife with challenges, not just for women but for many talented artists. Low wages and financial insecurity often force creatives to abandon their dreams. For women, these struggles are amplified by systemic inequalities and the pressure to conform to specific ideals.
Exclusive Interview with Yoko Matsuda
Has a particular role changed your outlook on life or women’s empowerment?
While no specific role has altered my perspective, every character I portray deepens my understanding of resilience and the complexities of human strength.

What motivates you on difficult days?
Practicing SGI Buddhism keeps me grounded. My mornings begin with self-reflection, followed by a commitment to contribute meaningfully to the world. This daily ritual aligns my personal happiness with the greater good.

How do you find purpose in both acting and humanitarian work?
My work with the UNHCR, supporting refugees, has profoundly impacted my life. Witnessing their resilience taught me invaluable lessons about strength, survival, and hope. This human connection enriches my acting, enabling me to portray deeper, more authentic emotions.

Can you share a lesson from overcoming past hardships?
Every challenge we face, no matter how futile it may seem, holds significance. Life’s obstacles are integral parts of a greater plan, shaping us into who we are meant to be.
Exclusive Interview with Yoko Matsuda
How has working with the UNHCR impacted your understanding of resilience?
I’ve seen extraordinary strength in the most challenging circumstances. Refugees, especially children, demonstrate the incredible human capacity for finding joy amidst adversity. Their stories inspire me to approach life with gratitude and strength.

Are there female role models who deeply influenced your path?
Angelina Jolie, a former UNHCR Special Ambassador, inspires me deeply. Her work combines artistry with advocacy, embodying a commitment to making the world better.

What is the most important message your films have conveyed?
While I can’t share details about my current projects, my work often explores themes of renewal and joy in an aging society, proving that youthfulness is a state of mind rather than age.

How do you prepare emotionally for a role?
I channel my personal experiences into my performances, drawing on emotions from my own life to bring authenticity and depth to each character.

What do you feel is the most empowering part of being an actress?
Acting teaches perseverance and self-belief. It’s a constant journey of growth, where staying true to oneself is both the challenge and the reward.

Can you discuss a project that was particularly meaningful to you?
Volunteering for abused children and refugee support during one of my most challenging periods shaped my life. These projects have become a lifelong mission, grounding me in service and purpose.
Yoko Matsuda on Women’s Empowerment, Acting, and Purpose.
How do you envision contributing to future women-led projects?
Beyond acting, I focus on regenerative medicine and empowering women to prioritize self-care. My goal is to support women in embracing their beauty and health, championing equality in every aspect of life.

How does volunteering inform your approach to acting?
Volunteering allows me to connect with people’s raw emotions and stories, enriching my acting with genuine empathy and depth.

What insights has your life experience given you about overcoming gender bias?
I’ve seen progress firsthand, like a 95-year-old gay man reflecting on societal acceptance in Japan. Such stories remind me that equality is hard-earned, but every step forward matters.

What advice would you give women aspiring to enter acting?
Acting transcends language, culture, and race. Embrace diversity, collaborate with empathy, and create art that reflects a shared humanity.

How do you see the portrayal of women evolving in the media?
While the media still reflects societal biases, I’m optimistic about the increasing representation of women’s multifaceted experiences and strengths.
Yoko Matsuda on Women’s Empowerment, Acting, and Purpose.
Are there specific stories about women you want to bring to life?
In Japan, societal norms are shifting, but challenges like low birthrates and labour shortages persist. I hope to spotlight these struggles while celebrating the resilience of women balancing motherhood, work, and personal growth.

How do you prioritize authenticity in your roles?
Authenticity lies in honest storytelling and conveying emotions that resonate universally, creating connections that transcend the screen.

What themes are most powerful to explore as a female actress?
I believe in showcasing the unique qualities of women—empathy, strength, and resilience—in an industry still largely male-dominated.

How do you use your platform to promote women’s empowerment?
By fostering supportive communities, I aim to inspire women to recognize their strength and realize their potential collectively.

Has motherhood influenced your view of female roles?
Motherhood transformed me, teaching responsibility, sacrifice, and unconditional love. Raising my daughter has been my greatest achievement and a profound source of growth.
Yoko Matsuda on Women’s Empowerment, Acting, and Purpose.
What’s next for you in acting and advocacy?
I’m preparing for the 20th annual UN charity event supporting refugees and children and excited about the release of a film I both produced and starred in.

What are your latest and upcoming projects for 2025?
I’m pursuing my dream of producing and acting in a Hollywood film, which is currently in the works.

Anything else you’d like to add?
With my daughter graduating soon, I’m entering a new chapter. I aim to dedicate myself fully to creating impactful art and fostering happiness for others and myself. Thank you so much for sharing my story through your platform; it's always a delightful pleasure to work with you.

Fashion model and actress Jacqui de Jong graces the cover of OTS Magazine’s January 2025 Women’s Empowerment Issue, embodying strength, elegance, and fearless individuality. Captured through the lens of acclaimed photographer Keith Stewart, the cover shoot is a stunning collaboration brought to life with the artistry of makeup artist Kellie Jo Poitra and the visionary direction of creative director Da’rrell Belton.

With her bold style and inspiring journey, Jacqui perfectly represents the spirit of this special issue, dedicated to celebrating women who redefine success and empower others to embrace their authentic selves.

From the boardrooms of Wall Street to the glitz and glamour of fashion and entertainment, Jacqui de Jong’s journey is a testament to the power of reinvention and fearless self-expression. A former corporate lawyer turned actress and model, Jacqui has carved out a path that blends intellect, creativity, and resilience—challenging societal norms and inspiring women around the globe to redefine their own narratives.
Jacqui de Jong on Redefining Success and Empowering Women Through Bold Choices
Growing up on a farm in rural Australia, Jacqui’s early life was rooted in hard work and determination. Her journey from those humble beginnings to earning a scholarship to Cambridge University and navigating the high-stakes world of Wall Street is nothing short of extraordinary. But it was her leap into the fashion industry that truly showcased her willingness to embrace bold choices, reject limitations, and craft a life driven by passion.

This feature explores Jacqui’s inspiring journey, her perspectives on blending intellect with creativity, and her message for women looking to reclaim their power and pursue their dreams unapologetically.
Fashion model and actress Jacqui de Jong graces the cover of OTS Magazine’
Jacqui, your journey from Wall Street corporate lawyer to the fashion and entertainment industry is nothing short of remarkable. What was the pivotal moment when you realized you needed to leave your successful legal career behind to follow your creative passions?
It wasn’t a need to leave but a need to also explore my creative passions. Basically, that moment occurred when I spontaneously decided to attend some NYFW castings one day.

You’ve shattered the stereotype of what a 'successful woman’ should look like. How do you balance the expectations of society with the authenticity of your own identity, especially in industries like law and fashion that often have strict norms?
I only align with the authenticity of my own identity. Societal expectations are only limitations on your creativity.

What advice would you give to women who feel trapped in a career or life path that no longer fulfils them but fear taking the leap to pursue their true passions?
Act first, think later. Follow your heart and what truly makes you happy. I never want to get to the end of my life and have enormous regret that I played it too safe.

How do you view the relationship between success and happiness, especially when you’ve experienced such a radical shift in your career?
I think you make your own happiness, which can be informed by success but not always. I am not driven by outcomes or results, or what can be termed “success”, by normal standards. Follow your inner passion and happiness, and usually the results will show up on their own.
Exclusive Interview: Jacqui de Jong
What does 'empowerment' mean to you, and how do you embody this concept in both your professional and personal life?
Empowerment is being able to fully express what you really want to say. Speaking with my voice next to my heart is how I embody this.

In your journey from lawyer to model and actress, how did you manage to reconcile the intellect-driven world of law with the creativity and freedom of fashion and entertainment?
The world of law has blessed me with a very analytical mind, which balances out my creative impulses. I never actively tried to reconcile these two forces; rather, I ensured they both had a place in my life.

You’ve been celebrated for breaking boundaries—what are some of the societal ‘rules’ or expectations that you have challenged or even rejected in your journey?
That you can’t start your life over.

What’s the one thing you hope to teach other women through your career and your personal story?
Believe in yourself and make the journey. Follow your passion; you only have one life.

Your fashion choices are daring and bold. How do you use fashion as a tool for self-expression, and what message are you trying to communicate through your style?
My style expresses my love of vintage clothes and modern sophistication—it is always extra—which reflects my personality of never wanting to fit in.
Jacqui de Jong on Redefining Success and Empowering Women Through Bold Choices.
Fashion has often been seen as a way to fit in, but you’ve used it to stand out. How do you think fashion can be a form of empowerment for women?
Wearing something bold and different signals to the world that you are not afraid of being seen; it’s a power move.

You blend Old Hollywood glamour with a maximalist style—what does femininity look like to you, and how do you see it evolving in the modern world?
Femininity to me is feeling beautiful as a woman in an artistic way. I think the more confident women become to express themselves, the more beautiful artistic fashion forms will emerge.

What do you say to critics who claim that models and actors in the fashion industry are ‘just pretty faces’ or that their appearance overshadows their talents and intellect?
“Look at me.”

How do you define beauty in your own terms, especially given the pressures to conform to a certain physical ideal in both fashion and entertainment industries?
Beauty is beauty from within as a person. Beautiful energy makes a beautiful person.
Model - Jacqui de Jong Photographer - Keith Stewart Makeup Artist - Kellie Jo Poitra Creative Direction - Da’rrell Belton
There’s often a dichotomy between strength and femininity. How do you reconcile these two seemingly opposite qualities, and do you think women are encouraged to embrace both?
There are so many strong qualities necessary to simply be a woman in this world that I think such a dichotomy is artificial.

What advice would you give to young women who are struggling with body image or feeling pressure to conform to societal beauty standards in the fashion world?
Be yourself and love yourself. Don’t look to the external world to fulfil yourself; fulfil yourself from within.

Growing up on a farm in Australia, your early life was quite different from the world you now inhabit. How did your upbringing shape your perspective on success, hard work, and self-determination?
I was always taught to work hard and embrace all opportunities, an attitude that has flourished in the fun, spontaneous world of NYC. I think this shaped my perspectives by showing me that just like growing up on a farm, nothing is promised, and you have to live for today and do your best in that moment.

Having earned a scholarship to Cambridge University, you’ve always been driven to excel. What are some of the core values or principles that have guided you throughout your education and career, and how do they continue to inform your work today?
Having the flexibility to roll with the waves of life and make the most of every situation.
Jacqui de Jong on Redefining Success and Empowering Women Through Bold Choices.
As a woman navigating the competitive worlds of law, fashion, and entertainment, how do you stay grounded and keep a sense of perspective when the pressure to succeed can be overwhelming?
I always remind myself that everything happens in divine timing and what’s meant for me will come to me.

You’ve made bold choices throughout your career. What role do risk-taking and vulnerability play in your personal and professional growth, and how do you overcome the fear of failure?
If you try something new, there is never a failure. It all depends on how you define the success. If you are outcome-focused, then not reaching a certain “outcome” might appear as a failure, but really, the only failure is that of failing to recognise the enormous lessons you learnt in the experience.

Lastly, Jacqui, what does the future look like for you? What are your dreams and ambitions, and how do you plan to continue inspiring and empowering others along the way?
I am continuing to express myself creatively through modelling, acting, and fashion, and I look forward to sharing my journey with likeminded women as I do so.

When did you realize you had a passion to become an Actress and how did you do it?
While I was modeling there were several times I was asked to be in commercials in non-speaking roles. I realized if I wanted to keep doing it I should learn the talent of acting.
When you look back to your journey from Modelling, Acting, and being featured in TV Land’s  ‘She's Got the Look, Big Rich Texas, and The Real Housewives of Dallas, what would you say has been your biggest achievement so far and What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Work has always solely been a way to make a living. People think I did it for fame but the truth is when it comes to my success I attach it to making an income not how much people recognize me. I’ve done Star Search, and Blockbuster Movies, and starred in Award-winning commercials but MARRIAGE is my biggest achievement, and maintaining a happy marriage is my life goal!
When acting, what kind of roles do you like or would like to play and why?
I LOVE comedic roles. If I can be goofy or make someone laugh, that is everything to me!
We noticed you are a huge lover of positive affirmations and this is something we resonate with. What is your own definition of happiness? How do you invite positive energy into your life and surroundings?
I have actually written 12 Affirmation books because I think affirmations can truly change your life if you practice them correctly. Affirmations take work and I am not sure everyone realizes that part.
My definition of happiness is HOPE. Without hope, it’s impossible to achieve anything.
This is my favorite question: In your own words, please define "Women Empowerment" and what it means to you personally.
Women's Empowerment is FREEDOM! Helping other women learn to stand strong enough to speak how they truly feel without remorse. To show them how to be FREE!!
You are an inspirational soul who loves using her experience to empower others, what are some of the biggest hurdles you have faced in life and how did you overcome them?
Self Esteem has always been my biggest hurdle! I have tons of self-confidence but the actual BELIEF in myself I work on every day. As a child survivor of emotional & sexual abuse and an adult survivor of domestic violence, I work daily on reminding myself of my AUTHENTIC VALUE!
What sort of message do you want to convey with your work and platform?
A message of POSITIVITY! That you can be whoever you chose! That you can live whatever life you want. You just have to know yourself DEEP INSIDE.
Photographer|Thomas Garza
What advice would you give to aspiring Actors|Actresses, and TV personalities out there?
First- make sure you want it for the RIGHT REASONS. Next- never stop learning and auditioning. Don’t think of each no as a failure but rather a lesson of learning. Never stop going!
If you could change one thing about the Entertainment industry, what would it be? What would you improve?
HUMANITY. The entertainment industry is based on individual opinions that can be as varying as colors in the rainbow. This is why it’s impossible to change. What one Casting Director thinks is perfect another may not like. Take every opportunity you can to find that one that like you!
Why is it so important for you to run a business or platform that empowers women?
Because I wish I had a powerful female role to look up to when I was a child. Someone who could have told me about shortcuts or how the world really worked. It could have saved me a lot of heartache thinking it was me. Being that for others, saving their heartache, THAT MATTERS TO ME!
How do you think you empower women through your work?
By example! I believe the fastest way to learn and really en-grain something into your brain is by example. If I can do… SO CAN YOU!
What are some of your latest and Upcoming projects?
I am currently working on Eternal Travel Magazine, a new travel TV show, and several non-profit events for a few different non-profit organizations. I am loving working on Eternal Traveler Magazine and all the incredible places we have gone to. I am also excited to have a section that highlights other travel influencers. I want to show my audience the world and the exciting opportunities that await them.
You also have quite the fashion sense on the regular, how would you describe your personal style? Also, could you tell us more about one of your previous projects "The Infinity Dress", I find the fact that it can be worn in various ways fascinating. What was the inspiration behind this?
I honestly dress by emotion. There are days when I am a total girly girl in skirts and dresses and then there are days when I want to feel powerful in high heels and fitted suits. I created the L’Infinity dress about 10 years ago but was able to actually put all the pieces together during the filming of RHOD. I wanted to create a piece of clothing that a woman could wear multiple times in multiple ways. I am currently working on restructuring the dress for a new avenue. It’s all very exciting!
How has your life changed and what has the response been like for you since being cast on the Reality TV Show RHOD?
Bravo Network certainly allowed my audience size to EXPAND. If I hadn’t been on RHOD I don’t think I would have the over 1 million audiences I have on Instagram.  I loved the RHOD audience and still do. I really enjoy it when I’m out and they stop me to say hi! It makes my heart smile.
Do you remember your first experience as an Actress in front the Camera?
Honestly, I don’t. I have been in front of the camera for almost 40 years. Most of it has been the time of my life. I love working! And I am grateful for some truly amazing roles that I have been in.
How big a role does Acting and Reality TV play in your life?
As far as a job, a lot. As far as affecting my personal life, zero. I am grateful my grandmother instilled in me a powerful foundation in God that allows me to remain my authentic self.
Where do you see yourself and your career 5 years from now?
Running several successful businesses and continuing to grow Eternal Traveler Magazine. I get so inspired when I travel and I hope it inspires others to travel as well!
Photographer|Thomas Garza
What is the most embarrassing or unexpected thing that has happened to you when filming either on a Movie set or Reality TV?
Embarrassing things happen to me ALL THE TIME! Tripping on the red carpet is one I am truly good at, LOL. I love when embarrassing moments happen. It’s like God reminding me of who is REALLY in charge!
What has been your favorite campaign or project to date?
I don’t know if I have had it yet! I still want to travel the world and have adventures in Italy, and Dubai, and of course, I want to see if I can learn a few new dance moves in Ibiza! If I had to choose one to date- It would be my award-winning commercial that ABC Network chose for their show America’s Funniest Commercials.
What Would You Consider the Most Important Components of Your Style? And Do You Feel You Have A Signature Style?
I hope I don’t have a signature style. Reinventing myself through my style is one of the most energizing things I love to do. At every event, I try to create a new persona in my wardrobe. I guess that's the girly girl in me.
What, Who or where do you draw your inspiration from?
From my grandmother's bible. From my fur babies. From nature. “Turn over a rock and I am there.” God is always speaking to me and I am smart enough to listen.
What’s on your mind these days? Could you provide us with some more insight into the other endeavors you are passionate about?
TRAVEL! TRAVEL! TRAVEL! I have got the bug for it! I want to keep traveling while working on all my projects. I am constantly fielding new scripts that come my way and continuing to create spaces to LAUGH! Laughter truly makes the world go round!
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your younger self?
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!!!!!!
What’s your beauty regime? Would you like to share some of your best beauty secrets?
I am a dedicated believer in washing my face morning and night! With a gentle non-foaming cleanser and a gentle brush. I wear sunscreen religiously. Other than that, I let the nurses and doctors take care of it!
Luck or Hard Work, what do you think weighs more in defining a successful Person?
HARD WORK! Luck only happens after you have done the hard work to put yourself in a position to be LUCKY! If luck comes by and you are not ready… you won’t be lucky!
What is your all-time favorite movie and why?
I don’t really have just ONE! I love movies that allow you to dream and become more of who you dream to be. I love inspirational movies that encourage us to BE MORE and DO MORE!
Any last words you’d like to add?
Learn to love yourself. After that, everything becomes much easier!

Your journey as a model and influencer has spanned a decade and inspired over 6M followers. Looking back, what are some pivotal moments that shaped who you are today?
It’s been quite a journey, and I guess one of the first great moments was when I started gaining recognition, and my follower count just skyrocketed. After that, things kept unfolding as I collaborated more with other models and influencers and began traveling for shoots all around the globe.

You believe that “beauty comes from within.” How has this philosophy influenced your approach to modeling, social media, and your interactions with followers?
True beauty does come from within; it’s like a light inside that shows in how you think and how you carry yourself. I always try to show that light, not just when I’m in front of a camera but also when I’m blogging, posting on social media, or interacting with followers. And in real life too, obviously. I think it’s about embracing positive energy - being open-minded and valuing communication with the people around us.

As someone who travels extensively, what are some cultural lessons that have had a lasting impact on your worldview and how you express yourself creatively?
Travelling and experiencing new cultures is very important to me because it inspires me and helps me grow as a person. Everywhere you go, you kind of have to adapt to connect with the people you meet and truly understand their culture. It makes you humble and is so rewarding - creatively as well. Exploring art and new art forms helps me grow as an artist too. Inspiration is very important to me.

You describe fashion as a way to “claim your place in the world.” Can you share an example of how an outfit or style choice helped you tell a story or convey a message?
Everywhere you go, you dress for the vibe. What you wear makes such an impact on your day and on the people around you. I mean, you can choose to go unnoticed by dressing super casually, or you can choose to power-dress and become the centre of attention.
Wherever you go, you can also draw inspiration from the aesthetics of the places you’re visiting. Like when I recently visited Morocco, I chose to wear a kimono-style open tunic combined with long pants and a sleeveless white top. It was an outfit I never would wear on the streets of London, but it felt right. It helped me blend in - but still made me feel like myself, if you know what I mean. Exploring outfit combinations is so much fun, actually.

Abstract painting seems like such a personal form of expression. How does it help you explore your inner world, and how do your artistic ventures complement your modeling career?
In front of the camera, I’m always exploring new ways to express myself, trying different characters and avoiding the same poses or facial expressions all the time - while still staying true to the classic Bethany style. Similarly, in my paintings, I maintain a signature style but continuously experiment with new techniques. I don’t want to repeat myself; I strive to evolve and refine my self-expression in both modeling and art.
I believe that keeping an open mind is essential in all forms of art, whether it’s painting or modeling.

Body positivity is a central theme in your message. How do you think the fashion industry has evolved in embracing diversity, and what more can be done to amplify inclusivity?
I think it’s so important to just be yourself without feeling ashamed of how you look. Every body is unique, yet the fashion industry still seems stuck on the idea that everyone should fit into standard sizes like S, M, L, or XL. But let’s be real - so many of us don’t fit neatly into those categories. I often struggle to find clothes that work for my body shape because I’m a bit curvier than what most garments seem to be designed for. And while it’s great that the fashion industry is starting to embrace more inclusivity and diversity, there’s still a lot of progress to be made.

How do you use your platform to inspire your audience to prioritize mental, emotional, and physical health?
I always strive to inspire my followers by sharing my personal insights and discussing topics they can relate to. Being a positive role model is very important to me, regardless of whether my followers are men or women I aim to spread positive energy, and in this age of superficiality, it feels rewarding to occasionally offer some food for thought.

It’s also crucial to remind people that many struggle with low self-esteem, mental health challenges, and the pressure created by social media’s constant stream of 'successful' individuals. In reality, we are all just human. I hope that by sharing my thoughts, I can help others feel better about themselves. Or at least put a smile on their face and make their day brighter.

We totally agree with you on that one.
Wellness and fitness are key components of your life. What does a typical day of self-care look like for you, and how do you maintain balance in such a fast-paced industry?
I try to maintain a healthy daily routine based on the 80/20 rule for diet and exercise. The principle is that 80% of your results come from your diet, while the remaining 20% come from your exercise routine. Exercise is important, and I believe anyone can find 30 minutes a day for it. If you can’t hit the gym, at least take a long walk. I’m fortunate to have dogs, which naturally keeps me walking a lot - and I love it.

The real key, however, lies in what you eat. Recently, I’ve been focusing more on nutrition and using exercise for overall well-being and physical improvement. Following the 80/20 approach to eating means prioritizing whole, nutrient-dense foods, managing portion sizes, and making healthy choices most of the time. I try to include lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and limit processed foods. This is fairly easy for me because I genuinely prefer salads and fresh food. Fun fact: I’ve actually never had a burger in my entire life (!)
That said, I’m no saint. I sometimes struggle with sticking to my daily routines, especially when I’m traveling or working abroad. It can be really challenging to maintain consistency, and since I travel a lot, it’s a constant effort.

With a following of over 6M, how do you balance sharing your authentic self while managing the pressures of social media and public expectations?
This is actually a very underrated part of my job, because being an influencer comes with a lot of pressure. You need to post regularly, and everything you say or do online is scrutinized - and sometimes criticised. It does get to me from time to time, as the pressure doesn’t disappear just because you take some time off or try to work less.
That’s why it’s so important to have a proper safety net: a supportive family and friends who have your back. My dogs are also a vital part of my safe haven. They help me find inner strength and maintain the balance between my personal and public life.

What advice would you give to young women and men aspiring to enter the modeling or influencer industry in a way that stays true to their values?
I would advise thinking this through carefully before taking that step. What are you looking for, and why do you want to go down this route? If it’s for attention, remember that your name will be tied to whatever you do online forever. The internet never forgets, so make sure to build an online persona you’re comfortable with in the long run.
Unfortunately, there are many people out there who don’t have your best interests at heart. People like me receive a lot of hate online. Some people are envious, while others are simply mean, and it can be tough to deal with.

My success on social media was partly down to luck. I happened to get started just as social media was beginning to take off. When I first started, the whole concept of being a social media influencer was still new. Celebrities didn’t really use Instagram yet, and most people only had private accounts. I felt there was no point in having a private account - my friends already knew me. But with a public account, I could make new connections and reach more people. As social media grew, I rode that wave.
I was 18 when I started, but nowadays I see people putting themselves out there at much younger ages. Honestly, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.

What does the word "women empowerment" mean to you?
To me, women’s empowerment is about ensuring women have equal rights and are not controlled by men. Our society is still very much male-dominated, and although progress is being made, I’ve noticed a kind of backlash recently. It’s an up-and-down journey, of course, but social media has unfortunately given a platform to those who oppose women’s empowerment, and their voices seem to be growing louder.
Additionally, some politicians and religious leaders attempt to control women’s lives and bodies through repressive laws and by stigmatising women who refuse to accept being treated as less valuable than men.
I believe it’s our responsibility as women to stand up to this and make our voices heard. Everyone should have the same rights - we are all equal, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or beliefs!

Fashion, for you, is a way to express and claim your place in the world. How would you describe your personal style, and what story does it tell about you?
I really don’t want to be confined to any specific style - I always strive for a look that feels right for me in the moment. However, one constant in my styling is that the outfit must make me feel confident. That’s the beautiful thing about fashion: the right clothes can be a powerful tool for self-care and wellbeing.

Who or what has been your greatest inspiration in fashion, and how has it shaped your identity as a model?
I think my greatest inspiration in fashion isn’t so much a single 'who' but rather the experience of being out and about, drawing inspiration from many different styles and designers. This has definitely played a big role in shaping my identity as a model.
However, if I had to name one fashion designer, it would be Alexander McQueen. I really admire his work - it’s bold, creative, and unique. What’s fascinating is that, at first glance, you might not expect someone like him to create such extraordinary fashion, which makes his designs even more inspiring!

You’ve mentioned that life is about exploring—whether through travel, art, or self-expression. How do you keep the spirit of exploration alive in your daily life?
Exploration is essential for growth and evolution, but you don’t need to travel across the globe to experience it. Sometimes, it’s as simple as combining different ingredients when you cook and discovering new flavours with your taste buds. Or it could be taking a different route on your walk and stumbling upon streets, buildings, or architecture you’ve never noticed before. Even having a conversation with someone you wouldn’t normally speak to can be a form of exploration.
Last summer, when I was in Capri, I had one of those unexpected encounters. A lovely old woman who owned a flower shop offered to help me and my friend take some pictures. She could hardly speak English, but she was so sweet and made that day incredibly special. It was a completely unplanned meeting, and it gave me a glimpse into the true soul of Capri.

Are there particular places or experiences from your travels that profoundly shaped your artistic vision or personal philosophy?
Well, it’s hard to single out any specific destination, but in general, I would say that Asia fascinates me more than other parts of the world. There’s something about their cultures, their food, and their life philosophy. I love meeting new people and trying to adapt to their cultures while learning more about them. Meeting people from different parts of the world is such a bliss - it expands your mind and helps you grow as a person. I’m a restless soul, and I love travelling because the change of environment inspires me so much.

What does “being the best version of yourself” mean to you, and how do you continually strive toward that goal?
It’s important to have regular check-ins with yourself, recognising any bad habits you may have and finding ways to address them. Small changes lead to bigger ones, and even the tiniest step is an important one that helps you become a better person

How do you stay motivated during moments of self-doubt, and what advice would you give to others trying to find their confidence?
We all struggle with ourselves from time to time, and we all have problems. But I think it’s important not to overthink them, not to get stuck in a negative spiral. If you feel you’re getting entangled in negative thoughts, try doing something else for a while. Distract the negative energy with something positive, like calling a friend, cuddling with your dog, or diving into creating some artwork. Painting is actually one of my favourite things to do when I need a different perspective and want to break free from negativity.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career as a model and influencer, and how did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges as a model is probably being told “no” a lot. This is a tough business, but I try to use those setbacks as fuel to improve myself, rather than being dragged down. I try to identify the reasons why I didn’t get that gig or job and work on improving those areas so that I am better equipped the next time I get that kind of opportunity. And always make sure to show up as the best version of yourself, regardless!

As you celebrate 10 years as a social media star, what are your aspirations for the next decade of your career?
It’s been an incredible journey over the past 10 years - so many life-changing experiences that have shaped who I am today. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to all corners of the world, and since travel is such a huge passion of mine, I’m hoping to develop that side of my career even more. I’m also really passionate about being a role model and inspiring others, so that will definitely continue to be a big focus for me. Building a successful personal brand opens up so many amazing opportunities, and I’m really excited to see what the future holds. I’m constantly working on new projects and plans - and I’ve got a few exciting things in the works! But it’s still a bit early to share any details just yet.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as both a model and an advocate for self-expression, body positivity, and inner strength?
That more women can feel they are in control of their own lives and are proud of who they are, and that more men understand the pressure society (and social media) puts on women (and men). Some parts of social media – Instagram included – tend to push a sexualised agenda, reducing women to sex objects instead of listening to what they have to say. I sometimes get DMs from female followers saying they wish they had my confidence, and it shouldn’t be like that. All of us should have that confidence, including them. And I hope I can be a small part of making that happen.

If you could redefine the concept of beauty for the world, what would it look like?
Well, it would not look like perfection. I don’t think beauty has anything to do with perfection. That’s why I love doing my art; there are no straight lines or pre-defined rules of beauty in abstract art.
A face can be so much more beautiful if there is something unique and different about it.
And it honestly makes me sad that people keep running to the doctor, trying to make their appearance ‘perfect’. Because perfection is actually quite boring. They should celebrate their uniqueness instead - their unique imperfection!

At OTS Magazine UK, we take pride in bringing our audience exclusive conversations with trailblazing voices, and this collaboration with Champions Speakers, is a testament to that commitment. As Europe’s largest keynote speaker bureau, Champions Speakers shares our passion for amplifying voices that challenge norms, spark meaningful dialogue, and inspire change. Over the coming months, we will be bringing you some powerful stories, empowering our readers with insights from some of the most influential figures across various industries.

In this powerful and thought-provoking Q&A, we sit down with Michelle Visage, a trailblazing female empowerment speaker and fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Best known for her role on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Michelle has spent her career breaking down barriers and challenging outdated gender stereotypes. Her voice resonates far beyond the runway, encouraging women and LGBTQ+ individuals alike to embrace their strength, stand tall in their truth, and lift each other up. In this conversation, Michelle opens up about the importance of inclusion, the damaging effects of toxic masculinity, and why supporting one another, especially as women, is the key to real empowerment.

Breaking Barriers with Michelle Visage: Empowerment, Inclusion, and Confidence.

Q: “RuPaul's Drag Race has challenged traditional ideas about gender. Why is it important that we keep breaking down gender stereotypes?”

Michelle Visage: “It's important that gender stereotypes are tackled continuously because if we're not on top of it, we're not understanding that there's more to life than the binary. So, it's not for the people that are in the know; it's more about educating the people that aren't in the know or need to be educated. And it's doing it through love and compassion and understanding instead of through hate and saying, ‘You have to accept this.’ I think if we explain to people what's going on, they'll be more open to it.

There's so much more than just male, female, boy, girl. There always has been. We've just never had a ballsy enough society to take ownership and to talk about it and to allow people—and allow themselves—to be who they are. I know that as a kid, I remember a local person who was, back then, considered a cross-dresser. And I was so enamoured with her. Like, I couldn't wrap my head around it. I was young—I'm talking six, seven, eight years old.

And my mother would say, ‘Don't stare, look away.’ And I was like, ‘But it's really cool!’ Like, there's a person here who's very hairy, wearing heels and a very bad wig and a dress at the local delicatessen getting a sandwich. And I'm thinking, ‘This is really cool!’ Like, I don't know what it is, but it's different and I want more of that. So, I think from an early age, it spoke to me, and I think I've learnt a lot along the way.”

Q: "Why do acceptance and inclusion matter? What are some potential negative impacts when inclusion is lacking?"

Michelle Visage: “To be accepted and included—it sounds really easy, but it’s not. Some people within your own race, within your own gender, within your own community, for whatever reason, usually come down to self-loathing, have a hard time accepting and including people. Full stop.

A lot of women don’t accept or include other women. A lot of gay people don’t accept and include or lift each other up within the community. It’s so important that we stop that now, especially for those two groups—women and the LGBTQIA+ community—because we have fought so long and so hard to be where we are now. To tear each other down and not lift each other up is doing a disservice to all of our ancestors and all the trailblazers before us.

Women worked really hard — just to get us to be able to vote, let alone to run for President of the United States or Vice President. It’s so unbelievable to me that women are almost raised to be catty, to tear each other down. Their man cheats on them, and they blame the other woman instead of blaming the man. It’s very eye-opening. And it took me many years to realise, ‘Oh, women don’t want to support women. Women want to tear each other down.’ The very term ‘being catty’ comes from that. The feline. You know what women’s privates are called; it’s all related, you know what I mean? I think that we need to start including and accepting and welcoming other women into our pack, into our group.”

So, let’s learn how to lift each other up through communication, support—even people you don’t know. That’s why I often say to people who are online, if they say to me, ‘I don’t have a family. I’m not loved,’ it’s like, ‘I love you.’ And when I say, ‘I love you,’ I really do. I can’t hug you. I can’t be with you. But I truly do love you for who you are. And everybody deserves to feel that.”

Q: "Drag plays a significant role in challenging toxic masculinity. Why does this matter?"

Michelle Visage: “Well, toxic masculinity has been something that has not only kept the LGBTQIA+ community down but also women. If you think about women who have been abused, whether it’s mental or physical or both—emotional—all of it. We start making excuses for those men. And society as a whole has told us, ‘Well, he’s just had a bad day. Let them take a bath. Let me get him a drink. Let them cool down,’ or ‘I’ll give him my body,’ whatever it is to make him feel better. Instead of making us feel better, we’ve been trained to accept them as the superior.

Toxic masculinity says women are not hot unless we’re thin and have big boobs and a juicy booty and a tiny waist. That’s not reality. Most of us aren’t born that way. And when I mean most of us, I mean 99% of us are not born that way. 98% of us can’t get there without a doctor.

So, for us, that’s not fair—that they get to call what’s sexy and what’s not sexy. Or after the age of 30, we’re thrown, kicked to the kerb, and of no need anymore. They don’t get to tell us that. Not at all. We get to rise up and be the strong women that we are. And we need to tell ourselves that we are valid enough and important enough and matter enough to have a partner that supports us.

And that’s really what toxic masculinity looks like—when they tell us we’re not good enough and we believe it. That’s where the toxicity is. If they tell us we’re not good enough and we carry on, we’re not accepting their toxicity. But for them to be able to think they can tell us—to me, that’s the danger.”

Q: "Empowering others seems to be one of your strengths. How do you do it?"

Michelle Visage: “I think when it comes to empowering myself or empowering others, I think it comes from confidence. I know it sounds weird because you think it's knowledge or education or wisdom. I think it comes from confidence because I think if somebody asked me for advice and I give them advice, if I'm not confident about the advice, they're going to be like, ‘No thanks, I'm OK.’

But really, I'm confident about it because I believe in it, or it's worked for me, or I've seen it work for others. So, if I'm going to give advice, it's something that I know. And if I don't know, I'll say, ‘Well, maybe try this.’ And sometimes when I give advice and I know that I'm right, I know that what I'm saying is right, the person's not ready to take that move, pull that trigger, because it's too much.

They'll say, ‘I'll never be able to do that. Nope, can't do it.’ And I'd say, ‘Come on, you can. I'm telling you; this is what you need to do.’

So, I think being confident is a good way to support others and be there for others. And for me, humanity matters. I really do care about the people who are hurting. Believe it or not, I'm not emotional in a way. I'm not a big crier, but I am an empath in ways that I can feel what another person is feeling right away. I know exactly when something's wrong. I know exactly when they're not happy. I don't know what that sixth sense is, but it's there. And sometimes I can't fix it.

But I can tell that person, ‘I'm here for you. You might not want to talk about it, but I'm here for you.’ So, I think opening up and being there for another person but also being confident and being strong in your convictions, is the best way to empower somebody. Letting somebody know that they have the power. They have it. We all have the power to get what we want, to be treated the way we want.”

OTSM: Hi Marija, Please fully tell us more about yourself and your personal background.
First of all, thank you for your interest in my work and the opportunity to present myself to your readers. My name is Marija Pavković, I was born on the 02.02.1987, in Zagreb, Croatia. I was born during the war and although I don’t have a lot of memories about that I can say that this definitely affected my childhood. I was fighting my personal fears and insecurities for many years. It was always all about gaining security in life. Like my profession. I was studying economics and finance and working for financial revisors until the day I decided to move to Italy. Italy was forever my dreamland and life here was like the dream come true. Italy thought me how life should be lived. You know what they say; Italians just do it better. In 2017, I started my fashion blog- Fashionistafacts.com and since then I'm trying to improve myself in the world of fashion.
OTSM: How did you develop an interest in fashion, beauty, and travel respectively?
I was a fashionista since I was 7 years old. It was just something I had naturally in my head. In elementary school, my class chooses me as the best-dressed student. Probably still my favorite achievement (winks) because it made me realize that others do see my talent. I was buying Cosmopolitan & Vogue since the age of 10 and then I would dream of wearing clothes from editorials. At my current age, I still remember how I was craving Sergio Rossi pumps.
OTSM: Where does your style-savvy come from, and where do you get your inspiration?
I think it comes from my passion. I have no other reasonable explanation. I can just lay in my bed and create millions of outfit inspirations in my head without any reason. This is how I relax. Sometimes I watch the other influencers to see how they would wear it but I never copy, it would be like betraying my soul. (Smiling)
OTSM: Fashionistafacts.com -is an amazing platform, When did you start blogging/ social media, and what was your motivation for getting started?
FashionistaFacts.com was the point I decided to make my passion real. It was a huge move for me. I was convinced I could never do fashion blogging for a living. It remained just passion for too many years. I had to battle a lot of my personal convictions to start the blog. The blog is a union of what I love the most. Writing & creating outfits. I started writing poems, lyrics, and stories when I was in elementary school. Some of my works were published in local magazines. And I still have that poetic dramatic way of expressing myself. If you visit my blog just to see images trust me you are missing the best part which is the -Stories.
OTSM: How have your blog and Instagram feed evolved over time? Any specific turning points?
I started using Instagram way before I start the blog so it was natural for me to use IG to promote the blog. It has been evolving since the beginning.
OTSM: What have been your keys to success so far?
My key to success is my enthusiasm. I really love to create fashion content. For me it's not a business or something I have to do, It's who I am. There were periods when I was really tired of social media, actually, I started to collaborate with a social media manager to liberate myself from the algorithm stress.
OTSM: Who is your primary audience, and what do you think keeps them coming back to your blog?
My main audience is women, who are already highly interested in fashion but mainly those who want to know when the best deals, discounts, and sales are on, my content also appeals to women who would love to boost their style -they follow my content to get some advice and ideas.
OTSM: How do you decide which brands to partner with, and how do you ensure that your fans are receptive to sponsored content?
It's simple, If I would personally wear it or use it I would sponsor it. I truly believe that you should never sell your convictions for sponsorship. Your sponsorship represents you and you represent them, I'm always honest about the products I present on my IG, and I always personally explain to every single follower if they ask me ulterior details. So many times I published products I love without being asked or paid for it. I just want to share with my followers something that improved my life and maybe it could help them.
OTSM: What is your biggest dream in life?
I dream about buying a villa in Tenerife and spending the rest of my life writing blogs near my pool wearing flip flops. Hahaha, I’m ready to retire. No seriously, I’m planning to move soon and probably my biggest dream is that everything works out as I imagined it. Wish me luck.
OTSM: Aw that's such a beautiful dream, I always say- Visualisation is Realisation. You got this Queen. Please tell us your favorite travel destination of all time?
Like I said before, I’m dreaming about the perfect island life. My second favorite place is definitely Venice. I visit Venice 5 times a year and it's never enough. It’s the most magical city on Earth.
OTSM: The best moment of 2021?
The best moment of 2021 was when my son Alexander (7 years old) won the Dante Alighieri award for his achievement in the Italian language and culture. I was so proud. As a parent, you are always doubting yourself and your abilities, asking yourself - am I doing the right thing? I have a different approach to parenting and this was like a signal for me to keep going in the way I know best because it is working.
OTSM: Favorite fashion and beauty brand?
I have several fashion brands, It's not easy to pick one, I'm also a huge fan of my local cloth stores, small designers and I would love to concentrate my collaboration's growth on them. With beauty, it's way easier, my favorite makeup brand is MAC, For beauty it's Pixi. I collaborated with both and I use both personally.
OTSM: How did the global pandemic affect you and your family?
The Global pandemic affected us strongly. Since we live in Italy, we had 2 general lockdowns and several partial lockdowns and quarantines. Actually even right now as I am responding to this virtual interview, I'm in preventive quarantine. It's exhausting. Mentally exhausting. Still, I have to mention that we used every single possible time to travel.
OTSM: In your own words, Please describe “Women Empowerment”.
Women empowerment starts from basic things, like having positive thoughts & words for the women close to us. We have to continue doing our job by empowering and encouraging them to believe in themselves, to create, to stand out for their ideas. Women empowerment is trying to encourage other women on social media, support their work and ideas. We are the only ones who can beat the patriarchal system and do what we have to do to stick together. We owe that to the next generations.
OTSM: Who or what is your biggest inspiration in life?
It may sound strange but the biggest inspiration in my life is my spirit. I'm a very spiritual person, I meditate, I talk to angels, I read about soul evolutions. I believe that my soul lived numerous lives, had amazing experiences in different dimensions, and although I admire people around me, my biggest inspiration comes from whisperings of my soul and my spiritual evolution. Isn’t that the reason why we are here?
OTSM: I agree with you, I describe myself as more spiritual than religious because I believe we are all spiritual beings having a human experience.
What’s your most-worn piece of clothing?
It's a pretty tricky question for a fashionista. We are not able to choose so easily. Well, I have so many hats and beanies, and I rarely go out without wearing a hat, so I can say that I have a mania for hats and I love the wear them. No matter what you wear at the moment you can try to match a hat to your outfit this will take your look to a whole new level.
OTSM: What is your daily health and beauty regimen?
I really take extra care of my skin, since I have had vitiligo for the past few years I take it more seriously to protect and nourish my skin. I always use a hydrating serum before makeup, and I always clean my skin well before bed. I use Vit. C concentrate ampules several times a year, Pixi Milk masks two times a week, and  Elisabeth Arden Night Repair serum mixed with an overnight mask every night. It works for me. I also use MSM integrator and melatonin before bed. Sleep is everything. Astaxanthin & biotin I use in the morning. Obviously, this is working for me but everyone is different, what works well for me may not work for the next person so it's important to know your skin and what it likes.
OTSM: What does self-love mean to you?
When I wake up every morning I talk to my inner me. Self-love is all about appreciating who you are, and to do that you have to understand your emotions, your desires, your pain, and your regrets. You are a divine, limitless, multidimensional soul. That soul needs to be heard, that soul needs to evolute. Healing yourself is the biggest project of your life and it never ends. Every day is a new chance to reinvent yourself, to understand who you really are, to forgive yourself, and to try to do what resonates the most with your inner you.
OTSM: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
One of the most life-changing pieces of advice I got from my spiritual coach Patty is: When life gives you a hard moment or situation, Take a breath, connect to your soul and ask yourself; What would my inner Master do now? What is the lesson I have to learn and understand from all this? This approach to life taught me to take control of my life because things don’t just happen. There is a reason why we live in this situation.
OTSM: If you had to give advice to yourself 5 years ago, what would you say?
I would say thank you for everything. You are courageous, you are a fighter and I’m so proud of everything you did. Believe in yourself just a little bit more.
OTSM: What advice would you give to aspiring fashion, beauty, travel, and lifestyle bloggers?
Maybe the most important thing I would say to them is to stay authentic. Be yourself. It’s a crowd in this business and you will find your true public followers and fan base by staying real. It's easy to start doing the same thing as everybody else and the trends are strong which makes it easier to follow them but reinvent them in your own way. Be patient. Success does not happen overnight, and sometimes success is the small things like struggling to fight your routine, to fight bad habits. Give yourself credit for every small achievement.
OTSM: What advice would you give to those interested in building a positive following online?
Instagram is really difficult to handle especially during these past few years. I lost a lot of followers in the past year but I also gained new followers I know it's not about quantity, it's not about big numbers its about true interest. Keep posting what you love and the right followers will come.
OTSM: What is your favorite thing to do outside of fashion blogging and social media?
I love to read about psychology, emotions, I love books about soul evolution, the law of attraction, and reading about angels. Discovering new ideas, truths about human spiritual evolution. I also love to go out with my friends.
OTSM: Any exciting 2022 projects that your fans should know about?
This year 2022, I will work on my professional growth. I plan to do the courses to improve my knowledge about fashion styling and I plan to offer my services in that area. I already did a lot of improvements in image consulting & personal shopping but I want to continue. It will all be revealed soon on my webpage so stay tuned, I will also offer something really interesting to improve your personal style. I know you all will love it.
OTSM: Anything else you’d like to add?
I want to thank you for this opportunity, I wish you a Year 2022 full of love, happiness, and joy, I wish you the world without pandemic but full of beautiful events, travels & new experiences. We deserve it.
